STEM Scouts: Call for Maker Fair Volunteers

Boy Scout Call for Volunteers: Maker Faire 2017

Hello, my name is Adam Wilburn and I’m a Boy Scout STEM Nova and Super Nova counselor, as well as the STEM Liaison for the North Star District, and the Committee Chair for Troop 1005, Christ Church Cranbrook.  Like many scouting volunteers, I wear a lot of hats, and I’ve volunteered for the highlight of STEM in the scout year… the Maker Fair at The Hendry Ford in Dearborn!  (http://makerfairedetroit.com/).  The Maker Fair at The Henry Ford is the 3rd largest in the country and a great opportunity to showcase scouting to thousands of potential members, volunteers, parents and supporters.

The boy scouts are exclusive sponsors of the Learn to Solder program at this year’s Maker Fair.  This is not just a Scout event, there are activities for everyone in attendance.  We have a special Maker Faire “blinky” and others that participants will be able to make and solder and a special “scavenger hunt” that will help participants discover everything the Maker Faire has to offer.  For Scouts, Nova Counselors will be on hand to support multiple Nova awards!

We need your help!

We need to fill up to 140 volunteer positions to support the 40 soldering stations, be Nova Counselors, help with registration, crowd control, etc.  I appeal to you, your family, and even Scouts ages 16 and over to come down and help out.  If you don’t know how to solder and aren’t a Nova Counselor, that is okay, we still need support staff too!  If you want to learn to solder, we have a special training boot camp on Tuesday, July 11th from 5:30 to 6:30. (https://scoutingevent.com/272-June).

Don’t think you go away empty handed.  For working just a single 3-hour shift at the Scout Station, you will get a free ticket into the Maker Faire. That is up to a $28 value!

The event is July 29th and July 30th.
You can sign-up for one or both days via this link: https://scoutingevent.com/272-MakerFaire.

Please seriously consider supporting this very important scouting program.  Bring friends, family, scouts (16+), their friends, and other scouts to support this great program and get a chance yourself to check out the awesomeness of the Maker Faire.

Yours in Scouting,

Adam Wilburn
Boy Scout Maker Faire Volunteer Coordinator

P.S. For those of you that just can’t commit, we’d love to see you at the Faire and are offering discounted ticket pricing at the same link as above.  (more info)
